New Rituals is a piece based on 10 ancient Zen chants and written for Nakama and a Zen choir. Originally the piece was written in three 40 minute long parts, but have also been modified to a complete concert version.
New Rituals is investigating the part of Zen philosophy which states that no thing exists as a separate self; everything is inseparable from everything else and always in flux. The piece also explores the necessity of form as a means to achieve freedom, both as a performer and a composer. Not freedom to choose, but freedom from choosing. The piece is a refreshing view on the relation between Western music and traditional Eastern culture, and between written and open musical material.
The original project was released on a triple LP/CD box on Nakama Records in May 2019.
